The University of Southern Indiana, or USI for short, is a public university in Evansville, which is the county seat of Vanderburgh County, in the US state of Indiana, as well as the regional hub for the Illinois-Indiana-Kentucky Tri-State Area, having a population estimated at a numb er of more than 121 000 inhabitants, during the 2000 census, fact which makes it the 3rd largest city in the state and the largest one in Southern Indiana.
USI was founded in 1965, first starting as a regional branch of Indiana State University, and became independent in 1985, when Robert D. Orr, an Evansville native, signed the school's charter and granted the institution's independence, starting a new chapter as the University of Southern Indiana. Since then, the university has continuously grown, having today an enrollment approximated at a total number of more than 10 000 students, offering various educational programs, in numerous fields of study.
USI's athletic teams are known as the Screaming Eagles, who compete in 15 varsity sports, in NCAA Division II and the Great Lakes Valley Conference, including in men's and women's cross country/track, in which they have produced five national championships since 1997, in men's basketball and men's baseball, in which they won 2 national championships (one for each sport), the teams also winning the 2003-04 GLVC All-Sports Trophy by nine points, the largest margin of victory since Lewis edged USI by 9.5 points in 1986-87. In the 25 year history of the trophy, the Screaming Eagles have finished 1st three times (2003–04, 1993–94, 1982–83), 2nd nine times, 3rd twice and 4th three times.
Brad Ellsworth, member of the United States House of Representatives in the 110th Congress, Indiana's 8th congressional district and former Sheriff of Vanderburgh County, Indiana, Vince Russo, former booker for WCW and WWF, booker for Total Nonstop Action Wrestling, who briefly held WCW's World Heavyweight Championship, and Darin Mastroianni, professional baseball player for the Toronto Blue Jays are USI's most notable alumni.
